Overview

What data centre cabling actually involves

Data centre cabling is the structured copper and fiber inside a server room or data hall: Cat6A horizontal runs to each rack, fiber backbone between rows and to the MDF, patch panels, MPO trunks, overhead containment, and the labelling and test records that make it traceable. It is built to a tighter density and documentation standard than office cabling.

The difference is not the cable, it is the tolerance. An office can absorb a messy closet. A data hall cannot: cable congestion blocks airflow, undocumented ports cost hours during an incident, and a full tray means the next cabinet gets surface-run cable along the wrong path. We build rooms so the fifth expansion is as clean as the first.

What we install

U1

Cat6A structured cabling

Horizontal runs cabinet to patch panel, shielded or UTP, terminated to TIA-568 permanent link limits. 10GbE and PoE++ rated throughout.

U2

Fiber backbone

OM4 and OM5 multimode row to row and row to MDF. OS2 single-mode for inter-building and long links. Fusion spliced on site.

MPO / MTP trunk systems

Pre-terminated 12 and 24-fibre trunks with cassettes. Fast deployment, consistent loss budget, no field splicing in the cabinet.

Cat6A for horizontal runs inside a cabinet row. OM4 for row-to-row and row-to-MDF backbone. OM5 where 400G headroom is wanted. OS2 between buildings or past multimode distance. MPO trunks wherever cabinet density makes field termination impractical.

Live environments

Working in a running room

Yes, we cable live data centres without downtime. We pull to spare pathway, stage cabinet by cabinet, and cut over inside agreed maintenance windows — never without a written rollback plan.

  • Pathway first. New cable lands in spare tray before anything is touched at the cabinet.
  • Staged by cabinet. One row at a time, so exposure is bounded and reversible.
  • Written change windows. Access, escort and cutover times agreed before mobilisation.
  • Airflow protected. No cable across a cold aisle, no blocked perforated tile, blanking reinstated.
  • Rollback documented. Every cutover has a defined revert path and a stop point.

FAQ

Common questions

Data centre cabling is the structured copper and fiber infrastructure inside a server room or data hall: Cat6A horizontal runs to each rack, fiber backbone between rows and to the MDF, patch panels, MPO trunks, overhead containment and the labelling and test records that make it all traceable. It is built to a tighter density and documentation standard than office cabling.
Yes. Most of our data centre work happens in live rooms. We pull to spare pathway, stage cabinet by cabinet, cut over during agreed maintenance windows, and never work a live cutover without a written rollback plan. Access and change windows are agreed before anyone is on site.
OM4 multimode handles 100GbE to 100m and covers most row-to-row and row-to-MDF links. OM5 extends that to 400GbE via SWDM4 for higher-density builds. OS2 single-mode is used between buildings and for any run past multimode distance limits. MPO and MTP pre-terminated trunks are standard for high-density cabinets.
Every copper run is certified with a Fluke DSX CableAnalyzer against TIA-568 permanent link or channel limits. Every fiber strand is OTDR tested with traces supplied, plus insertion loss testing on each link. You receive the full test set, TIA-606 labelling and a port-by-port patch schedule.
Yes. We supply and install cabinets and open racks, vertical and horizontal managers, overhead ladder rack and basket tray, copper and fiber patch panels, and fiber enclosures. Pathway is sized to 40 percent fill so there is capacity left for the next expansion.
It depends on port count, fiber strand count, cabinet count, containment length, and whether the room is live. We survey the room first, then issue an itemised fixed-price quote. We do not price data centre work over the phone.
