Running the network and the cameras together
IP cameras use the same Cat6A and PoE infrastructure as your data network. Cabling both scopes in one project means one set of pulls, one tray system, one patch panel build and one set of test results — instead of two trades working around each other in the same ceiling.
The split-trade version is where most of the waste happens. A cabling contractor finishes and leaves. Weeks later a security integrator arrives, finds the tray full, runs camera cable surface-mounted along a different path, and terminates into a second patch panel nobody labelled. Now there are two documentation sets, two warranties and two people to call when a port goes down.
- One PoE budget. Cameras, access points and phones sized against one switch plan rather than discovered later.
- One pathway. Tray and conduit sized once for the total cable count, with fill headroom left for the next addition.
- One test report. Camera runs certified to the same TIA-568 limits as data runs, in the same document.
- One warranty. If a camera port fails, there is no argument about whose cable it is.
