The site
Maersk’s distribution centre at 12333 Airport Road in Caledon has a large warehouse floor plus a main office, a middle office and an open bullpen. Every drop and every access point had to reach back to one main equipment room, the MDF.
The job came from Performance Team, a Maersk company. Their IT infrastructure team supplied the floor drawings, the network switches, the UPS units and the port map, and we built the cabling plant around them.
What we installed
- 200+ data drops across the warehouse, the offices and the bullpen, terminated on patch panels in the MDF and IDFs. More on our network cabling work.
- 48 Wi-Fi access point drops on the warehouse floor and in the offices, with the access points mounted to Maersk’s own installation standard.
- The MDF: a two-post rack, patch panels and the service runs from the building’s demarcation point (MPOE).
- Five IDF cabinets placed around the building, which keeps every copper run inside the 100 m limit for Ethernet.
- A fiber backbone: OM3 multimode fiber from the MDF to each IDF, with fiber patch panels and patch cords at both ends. See fiber optic cabling.
- Active equipment: Maersk’s switches and UPS units mounted in the MDF and IDFs and patched to their port map.
How the work ran
Most of the warehouse cabling runs overhead, so the crew worked from scissor lifts brought to site for the job.
Maersk’s IT team works remotely, so we photographed every MDF and IDF cabinet and every access point once it was installed and sent the photos to them. That gave them a visual record of each closet and each access point.
Since then
We still handle adds and moves for Maersk at the Caledon site and at its Toronto facility.
